Loneliness

Psalm 3 isn’t a victory speech. It’s a prayer from a lonely place.

David had lost his city. Many of the people he had led had turned against him. Even his own son, Absalom, had betrayed him and sought to take his throne.

David was outnumbered, hunted, and alone.

And yet, that is exactly where his trust became louder than his fear.

He didn’t pretend his circumstances weren’t painful. He didn’t deny the betrayal or ignore the loneliness. Instead, he remembered who was still with him.

He declared:

“I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around." Psalm 3:6

How could David make such a bold statement?

Because his confidence was not in the size of his army, but in the greatness of his God.

Just before that, David wrote:

“I lay down and slept. I awoke, for the Lord sustained me.”

Psalm 3:5

Think about that.

While surrounded by enemies and carrying the heartbreak of betrayal, David was able to close his eyes and sleep. He could rest because he knew God was still watching over him.

Sometimes our greatest battle isn’t the crowd against us.

It’s the loneliness within us.

David experienced both. He knew what it was like to feel abandoned by people he loved. He knew what it was like to look around and realize that people who had once stood beside him were no longer there.

Yet he also knew something greater.

God’s presence had never left him.

Even when loneliness strips away the crowd, God’s presence is not outnumbered.

Maybe that is what we need to remember in our own lonely seasons. Loneliness can make us focus on who isn’t there. Faith reminds us of Who still is.

If you’re walking through a lonely season today, remember David.

Your circumstances do not determine God’s nearness.

The same God who sustained David is the same God who sustains you. He is your shield, your protector, and the One who gives you rest in the middle of life’s greatest battles.

You may feel alone.

You may look around and wonder where everyone went.

But God is still there.

And when God is with you, you are never truly alone.
