A Little About My Relationship with the Lord

I think it's important to share a little about my relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

As you read my writings, you'll often see me say things like, "The Lord told me," "I talked to the Lord," or "The Lord showed me a vision." It wasn't always this way.

Many years ago, I developed a deep desire to hear God's voice. That desire became even stronger after my son Wesley passed away. I desperately needed His direction, His comfort, and His presence. What began as a desperate search for God has, over the years, grown into a relationship. Today, I can honestly say the Lord is my best friend.

When I first realized that many people didn't talk about hearing from the Lord the way I did, I actually thought something was wrong with me. I even stopped saying, "The Lord told me," because I didn't want to make the person I was talking to feel uncomfortable. But as the Lord continued to guide me day after day, I reached a point where I no longer wanted to hide what He was doing in my life. Instead, I wanted to share the hope that a close relationship with Him is possible.

More than anything, I want to encourage anyone who desires a deeper relationship with God. He wants us to know Him, to walk closely with Him, and to learn to recognize His voice as we follow Him.

John 10:27–28 (AMPC)

"The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life... and no one is able to snatch them out of My hand."

Jesus didn't say that a select few would know His voice. He said His sheep know His voice. That promise is for every believer who continues to walk with Him.

Another verse that has become an anchor in my life is Psalm 91:1.

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty."

I depend on the Lord for everything. I ask Him for direction in every area of my life because I know that abiding under His shadow is the safest place I can be. It isn't about receiving constant answers. It's about living close enough to Him that I trust His leading, whether He says, "Go," "Wait," or "Be still."

As I began sharing my experiences, people would often say, "I wish I could hear from the Lord like you do, Kimmy."

My answer has always been the same.

"You can."

God desires a relationship with you even more than you desire one with Him.

As I sought the Lord about why some people struggle to recognize His voice, I felt impressed by two things. First, we often place our own will between ourselves and our relationship with Him. Second, we sometimes put our own agenda ahead of His.

Jesus never acted apart from the will of His Father, and He calls us to follow His example. Everything points back to Jesus and His goodness. Because He loves us, He will never lead us in a way that contradicts His character or His Word.

Like any relationship, learning to recognize His voice takes time. We grow in that relationship by spending time with Him, talking with Him, asking Him questions, reading His Word, and patiently listening. As we continue walking with Him, we become more familiar with His heart, and we learn to recognize His leading.

So my encouragement to you is simple.

Just start talking to Him.

Tell Him what's on your heart. Ask Him to help you understand His Word. Invite Him into your everyday life, and patiently spend time in His presence. Trust that, as you continue seeking Him, He will faithfully guide you.

He is listening.
