Looking Out for God

What are you looking for today? Are your eyes fixed on the size of your problems, or are they watching expectantly for what God is about to do?

Psalm 5:3

³ In the morning You hear my voice, O Lord; in the morning I prepare [a prayer, a sacrifice] for You and watch and wait.

David began his day by talking to God. Before facing people, problems, or decisions, he brought his heart before the Lord. Then Scripture says something beautiful: "and watch and wait 

What was David looking for?

He may have been watching for his enemies. David had many who wanted to destroy him. As a king, he had every reason to stay alert and watch for danger.

But I believe he was looking for something else too.

He was looking to see what the Lord would do.

David knew that once he had prayed, the next step was not to panic or strive. It was to watch with expectation. He trusted that God heard him, and he waited to see God's hand move on his behalf.

How often do we pray and then immediately go back to worrying? Do we even wait at all? David teaches us a different pattern. Pray first. Present your requests to God. Then lift your eyes and begin looking for His faithfulness. Look for His wisdom. Look for His provision. Look for His protection. Look for His answer.

A few verses later, David writes,

⁷ But as for me, I will enter Your house through the abundance of Your steadfast love and mercy; I will worship toward and at Your holy temple in reverent fear and awe of You.

Notice that David did not approach God based on his own goodness. He didn't come demanding justice because he knew he deserved nothing. He came because of the abundance of God's lovingkindness and mercy.

That is true for us as well.

None of us deserves God's favor.

Romans 3:10

 ¹⁰ As it is written, none is righteous, just and truthful and upright and conscientious, no, not one.

Yet because of God's grace and mercy, we are invited to come boldly before His throne. We don't approach Him because of our performance. We approach Him because of Jesus.

So, tomorrow morning, before the day begins, follow David's example. Lift your voice to the Lord. Lay your requests before Him. Then look out not just for the battles around you, but for the God who is already working on your behalf.
